I recently did a painting titled "Jameka" and in my comments I mentioned my 10 year break from art. For all wondering how this happened I explain it below. If there are any persons out there like me, who didn't think school mattered take it from me. When it comes to having your choice of good schools, IT DOES MATTER!
I ended up frustrated and taking a 10 year break because I was a JACKASS in high school, and even though my portfolio got me was accepted to an great art school (one of the best in my area), my grades were to low for anyone to take a chance on me financially (and we all know how much a good art program cost). So I went to a regular college (for which I worked paid for), but they did not have a good art program. So I got frustrated and focused on a music career, and again being a JACKASS screwed up college.
Eventually, I became a serious christian and got myself together. I also have a twin brother and a little brother 10 years younger than me who were artist also. My twin didn't possess a lot of creativity so he stopped drawing when we were 18 and detest it as an activity. My younger brother introduced me to sequential art, he was the most creative of us all, and that made me fall in love with drawing again. We would draw for hours together, but then he stopped drawing too.
So here I am. I've had to almost start over, learning anatomy, and value, color. All of this information wasn't gone, but my confidence in what I had learned was gone. But God has been good to me despite my JACKASSNESS! I work as layout artist and do illustration on the side. So all is good. I'm not as good as I want to be, but I'm good.
All of my teachers now reside in books, and that's cool. An yall DA people have taught me a lot also. Big UPS to DA!
